Film Festivals
Explore cinematic brilliance in Amsterdam
If the cinema is your thing, Amsterdam has great events for you! Two of the city’s favorite film festivals, the Amsterdam Fantastic Film Festival and the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, offer screenings of some of the most creative works you’ll ever have the pleasure of viewing.
Amsterdam Fantastic Film FestivalStarted in 1984, the Amsterdam Fantastic Film Festival (AFFF) is devoted to all things fantasy, horror, anime, thriller, cult and science-fiction. This is the film festival for those who like to indulge their dark side. Originally touted as a Weekend of Terror, this now week-long festival attracts viewers from all walks of life. The event usually features a Night of Terror when you can expect classic thrills and chills. At the culmination of the festival, the audience votes to award the Silver Scream Award for fan favorite.
Although the subject matter for most of the films is fairly mature, children are welcomed to the event. In fact, a separate Children’s Festival runs at the same time as the AFFF with a focus on animated and sci-fi films. And you can always send them to the Artis Zoo with their grandparents while you view films to your heart’s content.
International Documentary Film Festival AmsterdamAt the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFFA), over 250 documentaries are screened from contributors around the globe. The IDFFA is the largest documentary festival in the world! While keeping a certain political focus, the IDFFA welcomes submission from all genres and contributions from every country.
Classes, seminars and debates are held throughout the eleven-day festival. Whether you’re coming to learn or to sit back and appreciate the films, you won’t leave disappointed. Creative documentaries are the major focus of the festival as the IDFFA searches to give filmmakers a creative outlet for their opinions and experiences.
Awards are given for audience favorite, films of different lengths and debut films from up-and-coming artists. The most prestigious award at the festival is the Joris Ivens Award that is voted on by a committee of five international jurors. Films are judged on form, communication, content and balance.
Amsterdam’s film festivals have much to offer. No matter what your taste, you’re sure to be impressed by the creative and moving works submitted by filmmakers from around the world.
