SAIL Amsterdam

Enjoy the open seas during this special event!

The lure of open water has always had an important role in Dutch history. The city of Amsterdam in particular flourished because of the trade that came through its ports. To celebrate a healthy and symbiotic relationship with the sea, every five years SAIL Amsterdam is held along the Amsterdam waterfront.

What is SAIL Amsterdam?

This six day event celebrates Amsterdam’s sailing heritage and the cultural and tangible wealth it brought to the area. Traditionally, SAIL Amsterdam was a time for captains and crews of tall ships and other historic boats to show their skill and educate the public. Today, modern boats are also welcome to take part in the festivities. The impressive vessels will dock in the harbor of Amsterdam at the Oosterdok and Aquarena. The event is a celebration not only of history, but of friendship, tolerance and understanding.

What happens at SAIL Amsterdam?

The focus of SAIL Amsterdam is on three aspects of life on the water as explored through nautical, cultural and youth programs. The event starts off with the SAIL IN parade. Boats of all sorts cruise from Ijmuiden to Amsterdam along the North Sea Canal to the pleasure of thousands of viewers.

Cultural events focus on the different ways of life around the six seas. Different booths and pavilions will offer you a taste of cultural cuisines from around the world while you listen to folk stories, learn cultural dances and appreciate a variety of different styles of music. SAIL Amsterdam has something to offer everyone.

The festival’s youth programs seek to educate youth about nautical life through games and competitions. During the six day event, youths will get an understanding of how different cultures around the world are similar to and different from their own.

When is the next SAIL Amsterdam?

The next SAIL Amsterdam event will be held in August 2010. Plans are already underway to make this event the biggest and best yet. If you’re planning to visit Amsterdam that year, expect to see the harbor come alive as locals and tourists alike flock to see the tall ships and replicas of ships that played a role in shaping Amsterdam’s history.

SAIL Amsterdam is a fun way to learn more about Amsterdam and the crucial role that sailing had in its history. Because SAIL Amsterdam is only held once every five years, a great deal of excitement builds around it. You’ll get to explore stunning examples of real trade ships and learn about other cultures in a hands-on way. SAIL Amsterdam does what it promises – creating friendships that span the globe.
