Artis Zoo
This zoo has it all
The Artis Zoological Museum, known as Artis Zoo, is a wonderful addition to Amsterdam’s culture and entertainment. It’s really a combination of zoo, aquarium, botanical garden, planetarium, geological museum and zoological museum. This amazing natural, cultural and historical mix gives visitors a little bit of everything in the heart of Amsterdam. Travel to Amsterdam wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the Artis Zoo for anyone - especially for parents and children.
Botanical GardensOver 200 tree varieties, including some extremely rare specimens, exist in the gardens at Artis Zoo. Visitors can learn about the diverse array of botanical life that thrives in Amsterdam and its surrounding area in the large greenhouses here. In addition, some exotic species are cared for here in an effort to learn and preserve more. Guests of the Artis Zoo are exposed to carnivorous plants, cacti and tropicals that are enough to fascinate those with even remotely green thumbs. True to their native flower, the botanical gardens produce a spectacular show of tulips between January and May.
Zoological MuseumThe Aquarium building, which houses the Zoological Museum, displays various exhibitions throughout the year. The tempestuous relationship between man and beast is frequently the focus, and is therefore one of the features people most look forward to seeing at the Artis Zoo. This fragment of the Artis Zoo covers everything from dinosaurs to photography.
Planetarium & Geological MuseumVisitors to the Planetarium and Geological Museum can ponder the nature of the cosmos and the evolution of Earth right in the middle of bustling Amsterdam. The cosmos comes in the form of a 640 square meter Planetarium dome. Permanent exhibits on astronomy and space exploration are favorites that keep Amsterdam citizens and tourists coming back for more, year after year.
Zoo & AquariumThe exotic livestock at the zoo and aquarium of Artis Zoo are fan favorites in Amsterdam. From the animals of the Amazonian rain forests to subtropical fish exhibits, exotic beasts and their intricately replicated habitats are absolutely fascinating. Be sure to step into the darkness of the abyssal aquarium area to see the lantern fish!
One day is simply not enough to experience the Artis Zoo. Be sure to get a guided tour so you can see as much as possible. And call in advance if you have a large group!
